HAVE YOU SEEN ANY OF THESE
CARBOHYDRATE-ADDICTED KIDS?
Carbohydrate-addicted kids come in all
shapes and sizes.
These descriptions make it easy to spot a carbo-addict
right before your eyes!
THE LOCUST:
Whether slim or overweight, The Locust seems to be ever-hungry and can consume great quantities of food. Parents may be unsure as to whether they're observing a "healthy" appetite or an addiction to snack food, junk food, and sweets.
THE RABBIT:
Often very active, this nibbler would prefer to eat on the run, surviving on snack foods, junk food, sandwiches, and sweets. Some rabbits are slim, some struggle with their weight; in either case parents may not realize that blood-sugar dips may be the source of their youngster's mood swings, extremes in energy levels, learning problems, and difficulties in concentration.
THE BEAR:
A dedicated lover of starches and junk food, a Bear can consume these foods in great quantities and, after eating, often becomes sluggish. These kids have a tendency to put on pounds easily and changing seasons can bring changes in their appetite, activity levels, and weight.
THE SPONGE:
If it's liquid, it disappears in the presence of the Sponge. Eternally thirsty, these kids consume great quantities of regular or artificially-sweetened soda, sports drinks, fruit juice, fruit-flavored drinks, iced tea, lemonade and regular, low-fat, or chocolate-flavored milk. The thirst that drives a Sponge is usually a quest for carbos rather than a physical call for fluid. Sponges can experience a wide variety of low-blood-sugar-related problems.
THE FRUIT BAT:
Great and frequent consumers of fresh, canned, or dried fruit, a Fruit Bat (of any weight) may appear to be eating "healthy" foods. Parents may not realize that an addiction to carbohydrates may be causing low-blood-sugar-related psychological, emotional, mood, learning and/or weight problems.
If any of these kids (or all of them) look familiar,
you may very well have a carbohydrate-addicted youngster on your hands.
