Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
on Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Q: Is SAD something that I should worry about?

A: SAD is a relatively new discovery that appears to affect as many as 5 million Americans, many of whom appear to be CAs. Women represent about 80% of this group. It is a type of depression that appears with the shortening of the days in winter and seem to be relieved by the lengthening days of spring. SAD symptoms appear to mimic normal depression symptoms: fatigue, irritability, anxiety, lower sex drive, and the shunning of social activities. Some people with severe SAD may sleep up to sixteen hours a day and still have a hard time getting out of bed. SAD victims have terrible carbohydrate cravings as well as show significant weight gain as the depression takes over. Until SAD was identified and defined, the SAD victim was treated with classical depression therapy. Currently, SAD is treated in several ways, one of which is following a diet that help to stabilize insulin levels.
